The bright flames surrounding him dimmed slightly as Belch approached the entrance to the once great city. He was once again too late. Most of the excitement had gone from this place and people were already working together to rebuild what little they had left. "Bah' pathetic..." he commented to himself as he watched from a distance as two neighbours helped each other out, picking up pieces of broken pottery.
"Why can't they be like the Trolls and squabble" he said aloud wondering to himself.
Well he was here now, travelling back to where the portal left him was too much bother he might as well explore a little.
The stumpy creature hopped along a short distance then shook as if he were going to implode, slowly the flames around him darkened and the light his natural appearance gave off disappeared. The black flames flickered with the occasional hint of dark blue and hues of dark purple.
He continued his funny walk, occasionally hoping like a vulture being too lazy to fly to catch its prey.
As he approached the great gate he took in all the intricate work that had once gone into it, the gate which once showed off the pride of this place. He chuckled, what a waste of energy and time he thought to himself.
Small settlements lingered along the path leading to the gate, Too poor to be within the city walls yet not stupid enough to stray too far from the protection they thought the city could offer.
Belch paused for a moment as he heard crying.
It was coming from the rear of a small hovel. A child... "Oooo I do hope it’s unwell or injured" The thought of a fleshy suffering was too tempting not to ignore.
He flapped his small wings in excitement and hopped towards the property and peered around the back. The shutters were closed but the hovel was in such a poor condition looking between the cracks was not a problem. It was amazing such a building had survived for so long.
The scene was of a human telling off her offspring, the child was crying as the woman was shouting. After 5-10 minutes the woman slammed the door to the room and the click of the lock was heard. She had locked the child it's bedroom to stew about whatever it had done.
Belch couldn't care less for the child or what bad deeds it had done. Human affairs were always so trivia. He watched as the child stopped crying into its pillow, it was now angry and shouting "I hate you, I hate you!!!! Dad hates you, I hate you Waaaaaaaa" it threw something across the room in its anger....
Belch smiled and started to whisper, his voice a soft child like "That's right, we hate her we always have... I should never have married her"
The child hushed for a moment and looked around. "Who said that"
"A listening ear! A shoulder to cry on!" Belch replied
"Dad? is that you... Dad you died... no.... It me...I'll be fine...I have to stop day dreaming, your not really here.............are.....you?"
"Noooo sweetheart... I am here...never stop daydreaming, life goes on after death. I am watching you always..." Belch replied
"Daddy" the child looks surprised but was smiling, happy to be talking once again to her father, happy to know he was still with her in some form.
"Daddy I love you"
The words cut through Belch like a knife, he wanted to choke. love was such a powerful emotion humans and angles used. He wanted to go in there right now and burn the place down with both the humans inside and show him what he truly thought of that emotion.... but he took a breath and calmed down. He didn't want to make a scene... no he was after something else something humans were always so very good at.
"She killed me, you mother killed me.... you have a right to hate her... I hate her" Belch whispered
He watched as smiled as the words fuelled the child’s rage. Her fists clenched she grabbed the nearest things she could and hurled them at the door and started to scream.
*that’s it, that’s it... your doing great* Belch thought.
His flames flickered violently, more hues of purple and blue flicked away from the dark flames.
"I am in so much pain because of her....so much pain..." Belch continued. The lies were working well and the child’s imagination was brilliant, Belch couldn't believe his luck. The child was raging, her temper rising as she was going into a fit of anger, now slamming the door with her fists and tears streaming in her eyes, her mother shouting on the other side not wanting to go into the room while she was acting so violently.
Belche's flames suddenly flashed a bright green before reverting back to his natural orange. "Uh...time to go" he said to himself.
He hoped away from the screaming household happy with the suffering he had just made and feeling content in a way a human would when just eaten, full of new energy he shook his flames back to their dull cover and continued to hop towards the entrance of the city.
